AS/A2 Music at Durham High School For Girls
AS Music will offer you opportunities to build upon your existing skills, knowledge and understanding, and to develop your skills in performing, composing, listening, appraising and analysis. A2 Music will encourage you to develop and apply these activities in specialised areas of study. You will be encouraged to make appropriate use of music technology throughout the course. AS Music comprises three units: Unit 1: Influences on Music – You will study one set work in detail and a selection of songs from 3 or 4 musicals, to develop your critical, analytical and listening skills. Unit 2: Composing – You will develop your confidence and skills in harmony and compositional techniques, and during the year you will compose one piece for assessment. Unit 3: Performing – You will develop your practical and performance skills. A2 Music comprises a further three units: Unit 4: Music in Context – You will continue to develop your critical, analytical and listening skills through studying one set work in detail and a selection of English choral works. Unit 5: Composing – You will continue to develop your compositional skills and compose one piece for assessment. Unit 6: Performing – You will continue to develop your skills as a performer and prepare a solo recital programme.
The AS and A2 Music courses will appeal to you if you have enjoyed studying Music at GCSE, or if your instrumental or vocal skills are of at least Grade 5 standard and you wish to develop your musical skills, knowledge and understanding.

Yes! The range of career possibilities continues to increase for those who have studied Music at A level or at university.You could take this course with other advanced level courses to prepare for higher education in Music related courses or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Music such as a Music Composer, Musician, Sound Technician or you may wish to use your music ability for recreational purposes. The course is designed to provide you with access to a range of music related employment and will also develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of other industries are looking for. You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Music, which could lead onto higher education to study Music related courses or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Music such as a Music Composer, Musician, Sound Technician or you may wish to use your music ability for recreational purposes. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will provide you with the skills, understanding and knowledge to access a music related career or seek employment in lots of other industries.
