Course description

AS Course Outline :
The content is split into four teaching modules:
• Module 1 – Development of practical skills in Chemistry
• Module 2 – Foundations in Chemistry
• Module 3 – Periodic table and energy
• Module 4 – Core organic Chemistry Both components assess content from all four modules.

Course content

Module 1 – Development of practical skills in Chemistry
• Practical skills assessed in a written examination

Module 2 – Foundations in Chemistry
• Atoms, compounds, molecules and equations
• Amount of substance
• Acid–base and redox reactions
• Electrons, bonding and structure

Module 3 – Periodic table and energy
• The periodic table and periodicity
• Group 2 and the halogens
• Qualitative analysis
• Enthalpy changes
• Reaction rates and equilibrium (qualitative)

Module 4 – Core organic Chemistry
• Basic concepts
• Hydrocarbons
• Alcohols and haloalkanes
• Organic synthesis
• Analytical techniques (IR and MS)

Entry requirements

Average Grade BB or above in GCSE Core and Additional Science (or a Grade B or above in GCSE Science: Chemistry). A Grade B or above in English and a Grade B or above in Mathematics.


For AS level, there are two examined modules;
• Breadth in Chemistry (Worth 50%) (Worth 50%) 70 marks (1 hour 30 minutes)
• Depth in Chemistry (Worth 50%) (Worth 50%) 70 marks (1 hour 30 minutes)

Both papers are sat in June, these count for a total of 100% of the grade of AS Chemistry.

Currently an overall mark of 80% at AS level represents a Grade A, a Grade E is 40%, with intervening grades at 10% intervals. (The A* Grade is only available at the end of the full A level course, with a 90% score at A level.)

Further information

Lessons involve a mixture of theory and practical activities. A commitment to discussion and study time outside lessons is essential for success in this course.

    • Welcome to our Sixth Form at Queen Elizabeth's Girls' School.  I hope that you will enjoy reading our prospectus.  It will give you a flavour of what we offer, but we hope that you will come and meet our students and staff so that you can get a real sense of what the QE Sixth Form offers.
      The school and the Sixth Form were inspected by Ofsted in March 2014 and I was pleased that the Sixth Form was judged to be ‘good’ and a strength of the school.  We are proud to be a comprehensive Sixth Form and proud of the progress that our pupils make, irrespective of their prior attainment at GCSE.
      This means that pupils who have done well at GCSE are likely to achieve very high grades, whilst pupils who have done less well can also flourish, provided they are prepared to work hard. We do not have such high proportions of top grades as selective schools and Sixth Form colleges because we admit a wide range of students. Able students achieve very well, but girls who did less well at GCSE still achieve success at A level. This is reflected in the very high ‘value added’ measures achieved consistently year after year.
      Our priorities are:

      • High achievement for all.
      • Enabling every student to fulfil her potential.
      • Development of self-confidence and the personal and teamwork skills which will enable each individual to succeed in all aspects of 21st Century life.

      Our success in this is reflected in the school’s strong examination results.  Most of our students go on to university and the destinations list is impressive.  Ofsted confirmed that attainment is good.  Students are also supported to pursue other routes which are increasingly available in today’s workplace such as modern apprenticeships.  Students across the ability range achieve considerable success in our Sixth Form and our value added outcomes have been ‘outstanding’ for well over 10 years which few schools in the country can equal.
      This is helped by outstanding teaching, pastoral support and guidance on higher education and careers. There is an ethos of hard work and achievement, but students enjoy their time in the Sixth Form and contribute much to enrich school life for the whole community.
      QEGS Sixth Form exists to cater for the diverse needs of students entering post-16 education.

      Always remember that Sixth Form courses are intended to give you more career and educational options when you finish than you had at the start of the course.  BUT you will not improve your level of achievement without hard work!
