Mathematics AS and A Level at Tapton School

Course description

This course will develop a students  skills in the principles of Pure Mathematics and apply them to Statistics and Mechanics.

Course content

Pure Mathematics (approx 2/3):  Proof, algebra, graphs, sequences, trigonometry, logarithms, calculus, vectors, functions, numerical methods, differential equations.

Statistics (approx 1/6):  Working with a large dataset, probability, modelling, hypothesis, testing, Binomial and normal distribution.

Mechanics (approx 1/6):  Kinematics, forces, Newton's Law, Motion under gravity, friction, moments.

Entry requirements

GCSE Mathematics grade 6 or above.

Completion of AS Mathematics to grade D is needed to continue the A Level.

Mathematics opens up the possibility of careers in medicine, banking and insurance, commerce, marketing, accountancy, engineering, research and design, educaton, government and public services, research statisticians, managers, administrators, manufacturing, industry and the armed forces to name a few. Naturally, A Level Mathematics is a very highly valued subject in the eyes of universities and other institutes of Higher Education.
