FLEX Access to Independence at Wakefield College

Course description

If you want to further develop your independence into adulthood, confidence and personal and social skills to a high level, as well as gaining skills that could help you to progress towards employment by engaging in a suite of vocational options, FLEX Access to Independence is the programme for you.

Course content

What You Will Study
 

Your programme of study will concentrate on improving and developing:

* Personal Relationships in Adulthood
* Safeguarding self in Adulthood
* Rights and Responsibilities
* Advanced travel skills
* High levels of Independent Living Skills
* High levels of Social and Personal Skills
* Skills for Employment or Supported Employment
* Communication/Literacy
* Numeracy

On assessment of work readiness, there may be opportunities for work experience that would develop skills   towards sustainable employment.

How you will learn

You will be involved in active learning through a series of projects. The projects will allow you to action plan, and produce evidence for your portfolio. Typical projects include a photography exhibition, a performance, an enterprise business and café.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry qualifications, but we will expect you to show you are prepared to give your full commitment to the course.

Assessment

By portfolio building, practical activities and production of work.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residential etc. which are payable by all students.

Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international students.

Future opportunities

Further Study

There may be the possibility of progress to our FLEX VOTE programme which is designed to give you an opportunity of studying at higher levels for personal and social skills, employability skills, maths, English and ICT and will also give you vocational options and tasters.

The programme also opens up possible opportunities for the College's Supported Employment Training provision.

FLEX Access to Independence is designed to help you move towards a higher level of independent living and possibly supported employment. It will enable your confidence and self-esteem to flourish in all aspects of independence and adulthood..

      Located just outside the Wakefield City Centre, our Thornes Park Campus combines a beautiful parkland setting with some superb facilities for the study of Music, Sport, Public Services and Travel & Tourism. Features include a Sports hall, gymnasium, fitness testing laboratory, climbing wall and sports pitches.

      Thornes Park itself contains a Rose Garden and Lake of the former Thornes House. The park also contains a bandstand that is used to host musical events throughout the year.

      Other facilities include an 18-hole pitch and putt, Tennis courts, Bowls, Miniature Railway, Cafe, Sports Pitches, Sports Pavilion and Athletics Track.
