Physics at Aston Academy
If you are ever curious about how the world around you works, then A-Level Physics will provide the answers. Physics is the study of the physical world, from the smallest particles to the biggest galaxies, and everything in between.
The problem solving, analytical and reasoning skills that play an essential part in studying Physics, as well as the mathematical ability required, are all highly valued by employers across a wide range of fields. With a reputation as one of the most challenging A-Level subjects, Physics is an excellent addition to any further education or job application.
The first year of the course covers classical Physics subjects such as mechanics, material behaviour, waves and electricity. You will learn about fundamental concepts such as forces, how things move, how energy can be transferred from one place to another, as well as developing your maths and problem-solving skills.
The second half of the A-Level course explores some more modern physics concepts. You will look at the most up-to-date theories of particle physics, and learn about the accelerators and detectors (such as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN) that were used to discover them. You will also learn about the history of the Universe, and the nuclear reactions that power the stars.
5 GCSEs at grade C/5 or above, including English Language and a minimum of a 6 in Mathematics. An A or A* in Physics or Additional Science is strongly recommended, with a B grade being the minimum requirement.
As well as providing a pathway into further study in science, potentially leading to jobs in cutting-edge scientific research, Physics qualifications are highly valued by employers in all fields, including finance, engineering, design, IT and many more.
