History A Level at Verulam School

Course description

To stimulate interest in and to promote the study of History: 

  • Through the acquisition of an understanding and a sound knowledge of selected periods or themes;
  • By consideration of historical sources and the methods used by historians;
  • Through an acquaintance with the variety of approaches to aspects and periods of History and a familiarity with differing interpretations of particular historical problems;
  • By promoting an awareness of change and continuity in the past. 

Course Content

AS

Unit 1 - The Road to Unification: Italy, c1815-70; The Unification of Germany, c 1848-90

Unit 2 - Britain, 1830 - 84; Representation and Reform

A2

Unit 3 - The United States, 1917-54: Boom, Bust & Recovery

Unit 4 - Modern British History Programme - Crime and Punishment in Britain, c1830-1965

The careers that the study of History directly qualifies candidates for are Teaching, Librarianship, Museum Curatorship, Archivist, etc. However, History is seen as excellent mental training, and as such is accepted for a whole range of jobs such as the Civil Service, Journalism, etc. It is particularly highly-favoured as a preparation for a career in Law.

Entry requirements

History grade B at GCSE. Students who did not take History at GCSE will be considered at the discretion of the Head of Department/Deputy Head.
