Media Studies A Level at Longsands Academy

Course description

Media Studies is about …

  • exploring the variety of ways in which media texts attract an audience;

  • interpreting media texts; the representations they offer; what they say about the people who made them; what they reveal about their intended audience;

  • understanding the media and their role both historically and currently in society, culture, politics and the economy

  • making informed arguments, reaching substantiated judgements and drawing conclusions about media issues

  • planning, researching and creating media products.

 

Students cover all of the following media forms: music videos, video games, advertising, film marketing, magazines, TV, online media such as blogs and websites, newspapers and current affairs programmes.

 

The exam components require you to analyse the range of media texts using the theoretical framework

  • media language: how the media through their forms, codes, conventions and techniques communicate meanings

  • representation: how the media portray events, issues, individuals and social groups

  • media industries: how the media industries' processes of production, distribution and circulation affect media forms and platforms

  • audiences: how media forms target, reach and address audiences, how audiences interpret and respond to them, and how members of audiences become producers themselves.

 

The non-exam assessment requires you to create media products in response to a brief. For example:

  • An original music video to promote a new or local/unsigned artist or band in a genre of your choice. You should create a product for an independent record label targeting a niche audience with an interest in your chosen genre of music.

  • A front cover and double page spread feature article for a new, original music magazine including an interview with the artist or band promoting the launch of the album.

  

 

Course content

You will develop a range of skills required for both interpreting and producing media products, including analysis, comparison, critical thinking and debate, evaluation and decision-making.

 

You will also learn how to use various pieces of media equipment such as video cameras, photo editing software and audio recording equipment and use them to create media products of your own. Examples are a music video, a marketing campaign to promote a new film and a magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread. You will learn to combine colours, fonts, images, language and layout to attract a specific audience.

Entry requirements

Students must have a grade 5 at GCSE in English Language and Mathematics.

APS: 4.75

Future opportunities

With the media being such a big influence on today’s society the ability to analyse and deconstruct media texts is a key skill. As such studying the media is invaluable to any career path which values creativity, teamwork skills, individual initiative and effective communication skills. Many of our students have gone on to degree courses in film production, journalism and marketing as well as working for the BBC and Pinewood studios.

This course complements many GCEs, particularly Film Studies, Graphics, English and Sociology.
