English Literature A Level at St Vincent College

Course description

If you enjoy reading and discussing books, this is the subject for you. We study a variety of texts, which will include novels, poetry and drama, from Shakespeare to the present day. There will be coursework elements in both the AS and the A level years of this course.

Course content

AS Level
Poetry – Forward Books 2001 – 2011
Drama – A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams
Prose – A pairing of pre-1900 and post 1900 novels on the theme of either the supernatural or detective fiction.

A2 Level
Shakespeare – Hamlet
Poetry – A choice of Metaphysical or the Romantics
Coursework – Comparison between two texts.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs grade A* – C which MUST include English Language AND English Literature


AS Level

  • Examination – 100%

A Level

  • Examinations – 80%
  • Coursework – 20%

• Trips to the theatre to see course texts performed
