This course is a mixture of theory and practical units requiring students to study a wide range of sports related topics. As this course is 100% coursework, you will need to be well organised and able to meet deadlines. You need to be prepared to work closely with your teachers to improve the standard of your work. Staff offer the students the opportunity to enhance their coaching skills by supporting lower school lessons and school clubs. Students spend a week in a different school or other sport setting; this contributes to one unit. Staff organise visits to sport facilities and encourage students to get involved in planning and organising school sport events.
OCR qualifications are valued by employers and higher education (universities and colleges). There are different types of sports courses available. Some are anatomy & physiology based, whilst others are much more coaching or psychology based. Depending on the university and/or the course some courses might require you to have studied a science with your sport. It is also possible to obtain apprenticeships in the sports and leisure industry. It is very useful, in addition to your studies, to obtain paid or voluntary work experience and take courses such as Higher Sports Leadership or coaching qualifications. Your teachers will be able to talk to you about these and encourage you to make the most of the Tuesday afternoon enhancement time.
