Biology Level 3 at North Hykeham Joint Sixth form

Course description

The Biology course is divided into 3 units at AS level and a further 3 units at A2 level. The first two units of the AS level are: Unit 1 (Lifestyle, Transport, Genes & Health) and Unit 2 (Development, Plants & The Environment). These are assessed via two 1.5hr exams, each contributing 40% of the AS marks (20% of total GCE). Unit 3 requires you to write a report on either a visit to a site of biological interest, or on a research topic. Practical skills are also assessed via a number of core practical experiments carried out during the year. This unit contributes 20% of the AS marks (10% of total GCE).

The first two units of the A2 level are: Unit 4 (The Natural Environment & Species Survival) and Unit 5 (Energy, Exercise & Coordination). These are assessed via a 1.5hr exam and a 1.75hr exam, each contributing 40% of the A2 marks (20% of total GCE). Unit 6 requires you to produce a written report of an experiment that they have devised and carried out. This unit contributes 20% of the A2 marks (10% of total GCE).

Entry requirements

Grade B at each Triple Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) or grade B in Science and Additional Science, and 80% ideally a grade B or above in Maths.
