Course description

‘A’ Level Mathematics is one of the most traditional, revered and highly regarded of ‘A’ Levels which complements Science based subjects and offers a broad balance to arts based students. It requires a high degree of commitment in students from the beginning of Year 12 and is of particular use to those thinking of higher education based in the Sciences. ‘A’ Level Mathematics is a great subject choice if you want to go into a huge variety of fields. It is an all-round subject that will put you in an extremely good position when applying for universities and/or jobs.

The key skills are observing and recording, together with the discovery and experimentation of techniques and materials. This is accompanied by critical research and opinion, composition and creativity with ideas together with presenting solutions. ‘A’ Level Mathematics also gives you transferrable skills for the real world; logic skill, analytical skills and problem solving skills. ‘A’ Level Mathematics fits well with all Science based subjects offers a balance to students studying primarily art based subjects, but it is also worth considering how Mathematics supports other subjects. Those studying Psychology, Geography, Business, ICT or Biology would benefit from the Statistics option. Those studying Physics or Sports Studies would benefit from the Mechanics option.

Entry requirements

You need to have studied Higher Level GCSE Mathematics and attained a ‘B’ grade, though in exceptional circumstances a ‘C’ grade will be considered; you must discuss this with the Head of Department. There is a 'Bridging the Gap' pack that will be sent to all pupils for completion in preparation for the course.

Future opportunities

Mathematics ‘A’ Level is valued by all institutions and can lead to a variety of courses. Studies have shown that those who have taken ‘A’ Level Mathematics increase their earning potential whatever their choice of degree. Besides this University courses in Physics, Business Studies, Psychology, Computing and Engineering normally stipulate ‘A’ Level Mathematics as highly desirable or necessary. Popular career choices include accountancy, economics, banking, business, retail management, surveying, air traffic control, architecture, cartography, psychology and teaching amongst others.
