Psychology Level 3 GCE AS/A2 —Edexcel at Oak Academy

Course description

The new A-level qualification is a 2 year course designed to create an academic, stimulating and exciting learning experience for students.
Studying A-Level psychology will provide students with the opportunities to explore human behaviour - who we are, why we do the things we do, what happens to our mental health when things go wrong?
Biological factors as opposed to learned experiences have always been key areas of exploring the psychology course.
What is it that makes human beings so-called "normal" or "abnormal"? Is it down to our genes, hormonal influences, biochemistry? Or, is it about what happens to us in our lives, the people we meet, influences upon us, events that impact us?
All of these issues, debates and approaches to psychology form a main part of the study of the A-Level and help students to try and understand reasons for, and behind, our existence and behaviours.
During the course students will investigate psychologists' research, evaluate the reliability of it and make decisions about whether experiments are valuable in terms of helping to understand the psychology of the human mind.
This will enable students to develop critical thinking skills that stretch and challenge them academically and that will help to ensure success in studying this subject.
Students will study compulsory units such as Social Influence, Biopsychology, Attachment, Memory and Research Methods, as well as optional units that may include studying Aggressive behaviour, Gender, Forensic Psychology, Eating behaviours etc.
Assessment will be via examinations at the end of 2 years in May/June and will consist of 3 papers of 2 hours each. Questions will require both short and extended answers and will expect students to be able to interact with topics studied as well as applying scientific, mathematical and research methods explored during the course.
A-Level Psychology is an academic subject that can lead to a variety of pathways including work and University. It is highly respected and popular course and students have always attained 100% pass rate. A-Level results have included A* grades that have enabled students to go onto top university places.
