Use of Mathematics A Level at St Vincent College

Course description

Building on the skills from GCSE, this course develops algebraic and problem-solving skills and introduces new topics such as normal distribution and critical path analysis.

Course content

AS level
Core Unit will cover:

• Solution of equations, algebraically and graphically
• Geometry
Data Analysis will cover:
• Bivariate Data
• Normal Distribution
• Measures of Spread and Central Tendency
Decision Maths will cover:
• Algorithms
• Graphs and Networks
• Route Inspection
• Critical Path Analysis
A Level
Advanced Calculus will cover:

• Methods of Differentiation and Integration
Mathematical Applications will involve:
• Production of a coursework portfolio
Mathematical Comprehension will involve:
• Analysing Mathematical Articles

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade A*-C, one of which must be Mathematics at grade B or above

Assessment

• AS:
Three one-hour written examinations
• A2:
Two 90 minute examinations and a coursework portfolio

Financial information

Students have opportunities to attend conferences at local universities

Future opportunities

This qualification will support many Higher Education courses and demonstrates an ability to use Mathematics as a practical tool. It is not designed, however, as a stepping stone to a Maths or Maths-related degree.
