Art, Craft & Design A Level at Heworth Grange Comprehensive School

Course description

Students will be able to use a wide range of Art & Design resources and will attend 7 hours of teacher-led lessons a fortnight. Candidates must be prepared to spend a considerable amount of their own time working on each practical unit of work. A-Level Art is a very demanding course where students are expected to work independently in response to a chosen starting point. Candidates need a genuine interest and enthusiasm for the subject and will need to spend a great deal of time outside of the lesson developing their portfolio of work, keeping a visual diary, visiting galleries, exhibitions etc

Course content

Year 12 (AS) Units Unit 1 – Portfolio Work

A wide range of themes and art techniques will be covered and students will be required to submit a final portfolio of work

Unit 2 – Externally Set Assignment

A range of questions is set by the exam board (AQA). Time is allowed for preliminary studies and students have a 5-hour controlled test to produce developmental work in their chosen area of study.

Year 13 (A2)Units Unit 3 – Personal Investigation

The emphasis of this unit is on self-directed study based on a personal issue, interest or concern with evidence of more advanced Art skills and techniques. The personal investigation must be supported by a written element of 1000-3000 words.

Unit 4 – Externally Set Assignment

A range of questions is set by the exam board (AQA). Time is allowed for preliminary studies and students have a 15 hour controlled test to produce a final piece of work.

Entry requirements

GCSE Art or BTEC Art

Willingness to develop a wide range of art skills, using different media and techniques.

Willingness to visit art exhibitions on a regular basis.
