Course description

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is a work-related qualification that focuses on the development of practical skills and underpinning knowledge in the science industry. The course will appeal to students who enjoy studying science through practical work by completing projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations.

Course content

Many different aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics are studied on this course. Mandatory units contain practical skills and underpinning knowledge judged to be essential. These units are:

  •  Fundamentals of science
  •  Working in the science industry
  •  Scientific investigations
  •  Scientific practical techniques
  •  Perceptions of science
  •  Using mathematical tools in science

Specialist units make up the remainder of the course and include such topics as:

  •  Physiology of human body systems
  •  Microbiological techniques
  •  Diseases and infections
  •  Medical physics
  •  Electrical circuits
  •  Practical chemical analysis
  •  Industrial applications of organic chemistry


A grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction is given for each unit you complete and you receive a triple grade for your final Extended Diploma that can be converted to UCAS points.
