Course description

Why study this subject at Beechen Cliff?

Studying German at Beechen will give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in German business, and gain valuable work experience, while studying your other courses at Hayesfield.

Students studying German gain an understanding of the culture, politics and society of Germany as well as build on language skills.

Course content

Gesellschaftliche Entwicklung in Deutschland: nature and global warming, recycling, renewable energy, education, world of work.

Politische und k√ľnstlerische Kultur im deutschen Sprachraum:

Music, media, festival and traditions.

Immigration und die deutsche multikulturelle Gesellschaft: social integration, Multiculturalism, increasing extremism.

Die Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands: communism in East Germany, escaping to the West, work and life. 

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in German or similar language competence.

Assessment

Paper 1 - Listening, reading and translation - 40%.

Paper 2 - Written response to works and translation - 30%.   This paper draws on the study of either two works of German literature or one work of literature and one film.

Paper 3 - Speaking (internally conducted) - 30%.

Future opportunities

International trade, working for the EU, travel and tourism, education, the Civil Service, MI5 and MI6, the fashion industry, the Diplomatic Service.

Anything! Languages can be studied alongside any other subject, in Sixth Form and at University level. Learning languages helps to increase employment and travel opportunities.

 

Extra/Super curricular activities

The World Languages Faculty runs trips and exchanges for Sixth Form students to France, Germany and Spain. There is also local university input, in the form of seminars and study visits.

The opportunity to complete work experience abroad is available, and looks very good on university and employment application forms.
