Business Studies A2 level at North Liverpool Academy

Course description

Business Studies is a course that combines accountancy, economics, finance, marketing and organisational behaviour and will provide you with an insight into how the business world works.

The course is for any student who may be interested in a future career within the business environment or for those students wishing to study a business related course at university.

Course content

Component 1 – Business Opportunities

The first component focuses on new business start-ups and small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The content in this section is based around the concept of starting a new business and the issues that surround the process of planning a new business. Learners will also learn about the different business organisations and the markets they operate in.

Component 2 – Business Functions

This component includes all types of business organisations, ranging from recently formed small businesses to well established multinational companies. Learners will study; marketing, finance human resources and operations.

Component 3 – Business Analysis and Strategy

In this component learners need to understand, construct and analyse a range of decision-making models and investment appraisal methods used by businesses to decide on their strategy. Leaner will study; data analysis, market analysis, sales forecasting, analysing financial performance and non-financial performance, aims and objectives, strategy and implementation, decision-making models, investment appraisal, special orders.

Component 4 – Business in a changing world

Component 4 focuses on how businesses adapt to succeed in a dynamic external environment. Learners need to understand that the business world never stands still and there are continuous opportunities and threats to businesses of all sizes. Learners need to understand that regardless of size, businesses now operate in a global marketplace and they need to consider a wide range of external factors that affect their day-to-day activities, decision making and strategy.

Entry requirements

Grade C or above in GCSE Maths and English.


The course at AS consists of component 1 and component 2 with component 1 being 40% of the grade and component 2 being 60%.

The course at A-Level consists of component 1 and 2 combined equalling 33% of the grade and component 3 and 4 each equalling 33% of the overall grade.

Future opportunities

The Business Studies courses allow progression to a wide range of university business degrees and many future careers including accounting, banking, personnel, marketing, sales or retail management.
