Information and Creative Technology BTEC Level 2 Award at Reigate College

Course description

The BTEC Level 2 Award in Information and Creative Technology (ICT) has been developed to inspire and enthuse students to become technology savvy and to become producers of technology and computer-based products and systems, rather than just end users. This involves students creating technology-based products or systems.
This course is intended for students who are interested in developing a career in IT and has a strong emphasis on website and multimedia production development. The Award is assessed internally by coursework assignments and externally by onscreen tests.
The BTEC Level 2 in ICT is offered at Award Level and is equivalent to one GCSE.

Course content

Students will use the knowledge gained to:

• Understand how the internet and web works
• Focus on hardware devices which combine to create a technology system
• Collect content for a digital portfolio
• Design and create a website using a client brief
• Design and create a multimedia product
• Design and create an animation product
The course will involve a lot of "hands on" practical work with computers. Students must prove their ability to communicate in various ways and demonstrate professionalism in an IT setting. This will be something that they demonstrate throughout the units of study.

Entry requirements

Students must have at least basic IT skills (such as being able to use Microsoft Word and PowerPoint competently). They do not need to have studied IT, but must be competent at producing written work.

Students will enjoy this course if they:

  • Are interested in computers and may well be thinking of a career in IT
  • Are happy to be assessed purely through coursework and can organise their time to meet deadlines and respond to feedback
  • Want to learn how IT affects society
  • Wish to develop skills such as document design, programming and web design
  • Are hard working with a desire to progress further in the IT professions

A strong interest in the subject and a good understanding of Mathematics and competence in English is absolutely essential. Applicants need to be aware that this is a technical subject rather than a general IT skills qualification.

The course is assessed internally on the basis of student portfolios and externally via onscreen tests. The Award consists of two portfolio units, plus one online test.
The programme of study is varied and is designed to prepare students for the tasks they might face in an IT-related job. Students will learn by completing projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands, and will build up a portfolio of evidence from the various activities they carry out.
A lot of the evidence will be written, but it will take a variety of forms, such as storyboards, annotated web pages, test plans, product review reports, reports for managers, posters and presentation handouts. A number of tasks will be assessed on the basis of observations of what the student does in practical activities. In these cases the teacher will provide appropriate evidence such as observation sheets and witness statements.

The exam board for this BTEC Level 2 Award is Pearson BTEC.

Future opportunities

On completion of this one year course it is possible to progress to the two year BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in IT, providing students meet the entrance criteria.
