Art & Design (Fine Art) AS & A Level at Brine Leas School

Course description

This popular A level is a practical course that allows you to use a wide variety of artistic media. We follow the Fine Art specification which allows for both two and three dimensional outcomes and can allow for elements of photography. During the course you will experiment with a range of techniques and processes and will be expected to produce large scale pieces.

Sketchbooks are a vital component and will need to fully support the course exciting and expressive work produced during lessons. The emphasis of this course is learning by doing, so you will have the opportunity to create imaginative personal work.

Art and Design helps students develop a number of skills:

  • develop your creativity and independent thought
  • learn to express yourself visually
  • let your imagination go wild

Course content

In the first year you will produce a portfolio of coursework selected by you and for the externally-set assignment you will create ideas in response to one of the five exciting starting points you will be given. Your coursework accounts for 50% of the AS mark and the externally-set assignment accounts for the other 50% (together 50% of your A Level).

In the second year you will be able to continue with your chosen area of study and create more in-depth coursework and you will be given another externally-set assignment to create ideas in response to one of the eight exciting starting points you will be given. During the second year, 25% of the A Level marks will be awarded for your coursework, which will include a 1000 - 3000 word essay and the externally-set assignment accounts for the other 25%

Entry requirements

Students should have achieved Grade C, if studied at GCSE, but Grade B would be preferable.

Future opportunities

Many students go on to take higher education in art and design, then aim to join the world of advertising as graphic designers, illustrators, typographers or become painters, sculptors, textile designers, fashion designers, photographers to name just a few.
