Carpentry and Joinery CSkills Awards Level 1 Diploma at Brooklands College

Course description

This course helps you to prepare to work safely and with confidence in the construction industry with a focus on Carpentry and Joinery construction skills.  You will work to recognised industrial standards and will gain the underpinning knowledge and skills to prepare you for a career in the industry. 

The college has close links to construction companies and the training exercises you will take part in and the environment you will work in are similar to those on site.

Course content

You will study and be assessed in the subjects below:

•  Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
•  Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
•  Knowledge of construction technology
•  Produce woodworking joints
•  Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
•  Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
•  Functional skills (English, mathematics and ICT)

Trips to a building exhibition and building sites are planned as part of your studies.  You can also take a health and safety test.

Entry requirements

The course is for 16-19 year olds who have a keen interest in carpentry and joinery and have some evidence of studying at GCSE level.

Assessment

In course assessment, end of unit tests and practical tests.

Financial information

Students will need to have their own protective overalls, toe-protective footwear, a recommended basic tool kit, a text book and basic stationery.  Students are allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred.

Future opportunities

Students generally progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry, however direct entry to full time employment or a construction apprenticeship is also possible career paths.  Successful students may expect to pursue careers within Site Carpentry.
