Hairdressing Studies - Level 2 at Ashton Community Science College

Course description

The Level 2 Diploma is a vocational and work-related qualification; you will have the opportunity to gain specific knowledge, understanding and skills that are relevant to the industry. The course involves being assessed on real clients in a realistic working environment. You will be expected to wear a salon uniform and bring in clients to complete your assessments. A professional image, mature attitude and excellent attendance are all vital to ensure that you are successful on this programme.

Course content

This course consists of a combination of mandatory and optional units each with a credit value. The optional units have been chosen to give you the best chance of achieving employment.

  • Follow health and safety practice in the salon
  • Client consultation for hair services
  • Working in the hair industry
  • Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
  • Colour and lighten hair
  • Cut women’s hair
  • Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
  • Perm and neutralise hair
  • Display stock to promote sales in a salon
  • Promote products and services to clients in a salon
  • The art of colouring hair
  • Salon reception duties
  • The art of dressing hair

Entry requirements

Students should have at least 3 A* to C Grades at GCSE preferably in English and Maths.

Future opportunities

A Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Hairdressing qualifications can lead into a wide variety of careers, such as Stylist, Salon Management, Cruise Ships, Company Rep, Trainer, Teacher, Mobile Hairdresser and Retail.

Further information

This course is suitable for motivated well rounded students who enjoy the practical, work related aspects of Hairdressing. You will learn by working on peers in the group and blocks before working on paying clients in the salon. Practical assessments will be completed on clients weekly. You will achieve the rest of the course by multiple choice exams, workbooks and assignments and of course completion of a final portfolio of evidence. You will need to be well organised and able to work independently and enthusiastically.
