Brickwork - Level 1 Diploma at Yorkshire Coast College

Course description

There is a new generation of young Bricklayers emerging. This group are fit, bright, ambitious and focused on a successful and rewarding career.

They know the options and the freedom that a career in Bricklaying provides Level 1 Brickwork is aimed at School Leavers as an introduction into the Brickwork trade. This course leads onto the Level 2 Diploma in Brickwork

This programme is ideal if you would like to follow a career in Brickwork. Yorkshire Coast College has a number of well-equipped brickwork workshops with everything you will need to get started in this exciting area.

Course content

The Level 1 Diploma is awarded by "CITB Construction Skills". During the programme you will be expected to apply the knowledge and skills you have learnt into variety of work activities in a variety of contexts.

This course includes the following topics:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
  • Knowledge of construction technology
  • Setting out for basic masonry structures
  • Mix construction materials
  • Construct block walling
  • Construct brick walling
  • Construct cavity walling

Entry requirements

GCSEs grade E to G or equivalent, including Foundation Awards and Entry Level Certificates. You will also need to demonstrate a genuine interest in the construction industry.

If work experience opportunities arise, you will be expected to attend.

For workshop activities steel toe capped boots or shoes are required. Learners will also be encouraged to purchase a basic set of tools including: Tape, Brick line, Corner Blocks and Brick Jointer.

Future opportunities

After successful completion of the CITB Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying you could progress onto the CITB Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying or look to enter the world of work, whilst continuing you studies, as an apprentice.

Many former learners from YCC have, once qualified, gone on to form very successful career working with larger companies and also forming their own building businesses. 

Yorkshire Coast College work closely with Scarborough Borough Council, local and national employers who are all currently working on projects in our area. We are also looking at introducing a number of new local Apprenticeship opportunities. Some of the current and ongoing developments in our region include:

  • A new housing development at Eastfield called Middle Deep Dale.
  • The relocation of Tesco’s to a brand new site that will incorporate a new build
  • A new housing development in Filey
  • An extension to Sainsbury’s

      Refectory and Square Cat Café

      Our refectory at Lady Edith's Drive is the perfect place to relax and unwind, whether you want a quick snack, a healthy lunch or just to catch up with friends. Breakfast is served every weekday from 8.30am until 11am, after this a huge choice foods are available including a range of premium sandwiches, pizzas, salads, paninis, and jacket potatoes. Our two campuses each have their own refectories. 

      The Square Cat Café at Westwood is a great place to catch-up with friends. We offer hot and cold drinks and snacks. From time-to-time you might even catch a live performance from performing arts students.

      Our Learner Engagement Team also provide other activities across both sites throughout the year.

      Common Room

      The learner common room on Lady Edith's Campus is located on the ground floor and near the LRC. Here you can relax with your friends and play a game or pool and our Learner Engagement team are always on hand to help you or provide information on a range of activities they are organising. 

      Learning Resource Centre

      We have two interactive Learning Resource Centres across Yorkshire Coast College providing lending, reference and information services and offering you the chance to utilise the latest technologies and study aids. Our Learning Centres are also linked to the British Library, meaning no matter what you need, you will always have access to it. 

      ICT, Moodle & Wifi

      Yorkshire Coast College has a great range of academic facilities for both students and staff. Feel free to check books out from our libraries and use our professional printing services amongst our many other facilities at Yorkshire Coast College.

      Computing Services

      Our ICT suites and ultra-modern facilities mean that your training and studies will see you networking computer systems, designing databases, manipulating graphics and images and learning more about hardware principles and user support. Both practical and theoretical study will play a major part in your course giving you a wide range of skills and knowledge, while working with the latest technologies.

      Printing Services

      Our Repro facility offers both students and the general public, first class business stationery, educational printing as well as a host of photographic and print finishing services, including both black and white and full colour prints.

      Sports & Fitness

      Our Lady Edith's Drive offers a Sport & Fitness Suite which will is available to staff, students and community groups.
