Laboratory Operations Apprenticeship at Preston's College

Course description

Then this Apprenticeship is ideal. As it offers you a combination of qualifications, that will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to work as a laboratory technician. Laboratory technicians support scientists and help carry out tests, research and investigations. They work across many industries and can be involved in activities ranging from developing new products and diagnosing diseases to measuring pollution levels.

Course content

Units of study:

– Comply with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
– Developing and maintaining working relationships
– Use laboratory information systems
– Simple sampling
– Calibrating equipment
– Controlling stocks

You will also undertake Key/Functional Skills and a Technical Certificate alongside the programme.

Entry requirements

All Apprenticeships require an initial assessment, interview and employment in the industry. At Level 2 you’ll need four GCSEs at grade D or above including English and maths. At level 3 you will need a Level 2 qualification in the subject or 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English and maths at grade C or above with at least a D in the remaining subject

Assessment

You will be assessed in one or more of the following ways:

– Course work
– Exams
– Oral questioning
– Portfolio of evidence
– Practical demonstration/assignment
– Practical examination
– Written examination

Future opportunities

You could progress to further qualifications or Higher Education courses. Once qualified, you might find yourself working in a research laboratory, hospital laboratory, environmental science laboratory or laboratory within an educational establishment.
