Film Studies AS/A2 level at City and Islington College
Mad for film but want to know more? Want the opportunity to make your own film, write your own screenplay or research World Cinema? This intensive and enjoyable two-year course allows you to do all these things and more.
In your first year (AS Level), you will develop your understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of film, developing your skills of interpretation and critical analysis. You will study British and American films, both classic and contemporary.
In your second year (A2 Level), you will build on the skills developed in the AS year, studying contemporary world cinema, cinematic movements and other issues and debates. You will make your own short film or write a screenplay extract and undertake individual research into a director of your choice.
- You must satisfy the general entry criteria for A Level courses, which are based on your GCSE results.
- In addition, you must achieve at least a grade B and a grade C in at least two written subjects e.g. History, Geography, Humanities, English Literature, Business, Religious Studies (full course), English Language.
- Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered.
- IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each skill) or equivalent.
Assessment is a mixture of coursework and exams at the end of each year. Passing the first year will gain you an AS Level in Film Studies. Passing the second will gain you an A Level in Film Studies.
Having completed A2 Level study, you can prepare for university entrance. At university you could take Film Theory, Film Criticism and Film History. You could also move into a range of film/video/TV production courses leading into the industry. Film Studies also complements the study of English and visual arts-based subjects such as Photography.
