Childcare - Playwork Apprenticeship Level 2 (CHD1) at Barnsley College

Course description

This apprenticeship is an introduction to the primary aspects of working with children and young people between the ages of 4 to 16 in play environments. It will provide an understanding of playwork values, and the importance of play and playwork in children and young people’s lives.

Course content

• Working within a play environment with children and young people

• Supporting children and young people’s play

Entry requirements

Two GCSEs at grade A* to E, plus English at grade 2 or above.

You need to be employed within the childcare setting or have an employer in this area willing to take you on as an apprentice.

As your programme may involve working with children, you will be required to undertake a satisfactory Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check.


You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, observations in the workplace and assessment tasks. You will be assessed both in college and in your place of work.

Future opportunities

Upon completion you could progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Playwork or progress your career in the sector.
