Public Services - Higher Diploma at Challenge College

Course description

Diplomas are different to existing qualifications; they offer young people a fully rounded education, which combines theoretical and practical learning.

This is an exciting opportunity to participate in a brand new qualification that gives an understanding of the Public Services sector. It will give you the knowledge and skills that you will need for college, university or work in an exciting, creative and enjoyable way.

Course content

The Higher Diploma principle learning will provide a broad understanding and working knowledge of:

  • Exploring public services
  • Legislating for public services
  • Community diversity and public services
  • Customers, accountability and communication strategies
  • Promoting and influencing public services
  • Managing public health and well-being
  • The role of public services in community protection
  • Career development in the public services

A stand alone qualification in functional skills will also be studied, and will cover English, Mathematics and ICT. Personal, learning and thinking skills will also be developed.

Entry requirements

All candidates will be interviewed and given initial assessment to determine suitability. Candidates for the Higher Diploma (level 2) will need to demonstrate Level 4 at Key Stage 2 SAT’s and should have an academic capability of achieving GCSE’s at grades A – C or hold a Foundation Diploma.

Assessment

Most units will be assessed internally through projects, exercises and assignments that demonstrate ability to cover the skills and knowledge required. One unit will be externally assessed, as will the functional skills. Informal assessment will be undertaken continuously to assist you in your day to day studies.

The Diploma is graded A*/A/B/C

Financial information

You will be expected to provide basic equipment, such as pens, pencils and paper. You will also be expected to find some of your own resources for practical sessions and your portfolios. There may also be a requirement to pay some travel costs if going out to employers’ premises for work experience opportunities.

Future opportunities

You can progress on to the next Diploma level or to employment in the Public Service sector and related industries. Further study is also available on a full or part time basis in further education.

Further information

The Level 2 Higher qualification is equivalent to 7 GCSE’s at A*-C.
