Music AS Level at Copleston High School

Course description

Performance makes up 30% of the AS course and takes the form of a recital and candidates can choose between playing solo, in an ensemble, improvising or realising music using Music technology .Performance time should be at least 6 minutes.

Composing makes up 30% of the AS course Candidates will submit two pieces, one to a brief set by the board and one other free composition or also to a brief. Each composition must be at least 2 minutes in duration.

Appraising is a 90 minute written examination which makes up 40% of the AS course. The first three questions are related to areas of study which include Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Music for Film, Popular Music and Jazz, Fusions and New Directions. One short melody/rhythm completion exercise

The second section is an extended response - essay type exercise related to the set works where candidates will be required to write two short essays.

Entry requirements

4 AS levels – at least 5 grade Bs or equivalent in different GCSEs or other Level 2 courses. 3 AS levels – at least 5 grade Cs or equivalent in different GCSEs or other Level 2 courses. In addition, a grade C in GCSE Music and the ability to perform at Grade 5 standard.

Assessment

There are three units – Performing, Composing and Appraising All of these are externally assessed.

• Technical Theatre.
