English Literature at Merchant Taylors' Girls' School
This subject is designed to encourage students to develop an interest in and an enjoyment of English Literature, to develop their understanding about the context and possible meanings of a range of texts and to develop informed personal responses. As one would expect, it will involve reading poetry, plays and novels!
At AS level candidates will study at least three texts from Victorian Literature. Drama and prose texts are used for coursework, while the selected poems of Thomas Hardy are set for the examination in June. Further texts will be studied for wider reading and contextual support as preparation for the unseen extract question about Victorian Life.
At A2 candidates will prepare for unseen passages on a set theme, Love Through the Ages, by reading texts from all three genres. The study of a Shakespeare play and an extended essay comparing two texts will encourage candidates to reflect on ways of reading and writing about texts.
