AS/A2 Art at St Margaret Ward Catholic Academy - Trinity Sixth Form

Course description

We will teach you new skills and ways of working in the first term of the course and then when you select your own focus to develop for your portfolio you will be able to work to your own personal strengths and preferences as an artist.

Whilst fulfilling the demand of the exam board, we believe in allowing each student to develop as an individual artis, working in their own way.

Course content

At the beginning of the course all students follow the same course, divided into three areas, producing three separate bodies of work which will form the foundation of their coursework. This will include printmaking, mixed media experimentation and the production of a visual art journal.

In January, any students taking the AS qualification will be issued with the exam paper and begin work on this. A Level students will negotiate their own brief for their portfolio and begin to develop work for this. The A Level students will then continue to work on their portfolio until January of the second year.

You are expected to annotate your sketchbooks intelligently using a good standard of written english. In addition, there is an extended piece of writing in the form of an essay which is embeddd in your coursework. This is between 1000-3000 words long and so is about the average length of an essay in any other subject.

Entry requirements

Hardworking, passionate and dedicated students who really want to do well.

A minimum of a grade B at GCSE is preferable.

Assessment

The AS course is 100% exam based. The exam is worked on over a period of around four months until completion in the examination.

The A Level course is 60% coursework and 40 % examination.

Future opportunities

You will learn to be inventive, resourceful, independant and creative. You will problem solve, set your own briefs and work with a wide variety of different media. You will develop confidence, resilience and a set of practical skills.
