Art - Art, Craft and Design - A level at Turton High School & Sixth Form College

Course description

Throughout this broad course you will be introduced to a variety of experiences exploring a range of two and/or three-dimensional media and techniques. You will work in both traditional and new technologies and should make links to critical, contextual sources throughout your studies. Drawing will be explored using a variety of methods and media on a variety of scales and you will use sketchbooks, journals and research boards to support your work where appropriate. You may explore overlapping areas and combine techniques in fine art, graphic design, textile design, three-dimensional studies and photography. A successful portfolio will ensure a firm foundation for further study of Art & Design or related subjects in Higher Education and career options include: Architecture, Fashion and Textiles, Film, Illustration and/or teaching.

Course content

Throughout the two year course you will produce a substantial portfolio of work. The A-Level course consists of two parts:

Component 1: Personal Investigation - worth 60% of the total A-Level. You will complete Component 1 from September of Year 12 to January of Year 13.

Component 2: Externally Set Assignment - this is the examination worth 40% of the A-Level course. You will respond to an examination question set by the exam board and have substantial preparatory time before undertaking 15 hours of supervised time.

Entry requirements

At least a grade 5 in GCSE Art and Design, Graphics or Textiles

Assessment

All work is internally assessed by Turton Art & Design staff and moderated by a visiting AQA examiner in June of Year 13.

Future opportunities

The majority of our A-Level Art, Craft & Design students go on to pursue an Art Foundation Course or are accepted directly onto degree courses to study: Architecture, Fashion and Textiles, Animation, Illustration.

    • Turton Sixth Form is located on Chapeltown Road, Bromley Cross.  The college is across the road from Bromley Cross train station, and is on a direct line 8 minutes from Bolton.  Buses from Bradshaw, Sharples, Smithills, Edgworth, Belmont and Astley Bridge regularly run past the school.
