Mathematics A Level at New Charter Academy & 6th Form

Mathematics provides a powerful universal language and an intellectual tool for abstraction, generalisation and synthesis. It is the language of science and technology. It enables us to probe the natural universe and to develop new technologies that help us understand our environment and change societal expectations and standards of living.
Throughout this two year course you will study six modules in total.
Examples of topics at AS Level:
· In Core 1 –Coordinate Geometry in 2 Dimensions; Arithmetic Sequences and Series; Differentiation and Integration.
· In Core 2 – Coordinate Geometry; Exponentials and Logs; Geometric Sequences & Series; Trigonometry
· In Decision 1 – Algorithms; Linear Programming; Critical Path Analysis
Examples of topics at A2 Level:
· In Core 3 – Advanced Differentiation; Further Trigonometry; Functions
· In Core 4 – Vectors; Partial Fractions; Advanced Integration
In Mechanics 1 – Kinematics; Friction; Forces
You need to meet the stated Academy entry requirements for AS/A2 courses and have a B grade or above in GCSE Mathematics.
Mathematical skills are highly valued and sought after by the most prestigious businesses and education establishments because there is a national shortage of well-developed mathematicians. Mathematics disciplines the mind, develops logical and critical reasoning, and develops analytical and problem solving skills. 6th form mathematics fosters an interest in the subject, as well as providing a study of the various applications of mathematics to real world problems. Students acquire skills which will be helpful in other A-levels and in any future career. Mathematics is a required A level for many courses at degree level including mathematics, physics, engineering, medicine, business & economics.
