Mathematics (A Level) at Norton Hill School and Midsomer Norton Sixth Form

Course description

Students wishing to take this course must enjoy Mathematics & problem solving.  You require a strong work ethic as this is a very demanding course.  Students will be expected to have a strong foundation in Algebra & Trigonometry.

The course consists of a Pure Mathematics component & 2 Applied Mathematics components - Mechanics & Statistics.

Course content

Pure Mathematics is the core of the course & extends the study of Algebra, Geometry & Trigonometry from GCSE & introduces Calculus.

Mechanics is the study of how physical objects behave when acted upon by different forces.

Statistics is the study of how to analyse data & calculate probability.

Entry requirements

Grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics (1-9).  Entry is at discretion of Head of Mathematics.


Pure Mathematics - 67% - 2 x 2hr exams

Applied Mathematics - 33% - 2 hr exam

Future opportunities

A level Mathematics is an invaluable companion course for Science A levels & for anyone intending to study the Sciences, Medicine or Engineering at university.

University admissions describe Mathematics as a facilitating subject.  It is also recognised as proof of a student's intelligence,& tenacity.
