Health and Social Care Level 3 Extended Diploma at Darlington College

Course description

A career in care can be varied, ranging from social work and nursing to community based careers. With a health and social care qualification, career opportunities are possible in many care environments, including hospitals, day centres and residential homes. This broad based course will give you and in-depth knowledge of issues within care, as well as extensive practical experience in a variety of care settings. If you are interested in a career which focuses on care, this course will provide you with the necessary qualifications.

Course content

You will have to attend lectures including tutor led sessions, practical sessions, workshops, and tutorials. A variety of teaching methods are implemented in order to offer maximum learning opportunities throughout the programme of study. Teaching and Learning will take place in both a college and real work environment to assist you in developing the practical skills required to achieve this qualification.

You will need to complete 14 mandatory units and 4 optional units to achieve this qualification.  The Mandatory Units include;

  • Human Growth and Development
  • Sociological Perspectives in Health and Social Care
  • Psychological Perspectives in Health and Social Care
  • Protection of Children, Young People and Adults in Health and Social Care

Optional Units include

  • Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • Sociology of Health and Illness
  • Behaviour Change in Health and Social Care

Entry requirements

5 GCSE’s at grades A*-C including English or an appropriate Level 2 qualification at a merit grade.

You must also supply details of two personal referees who are not relatives so the college can formally write to them to obtain up to date references to support your application.

You will be required to attend an interview at the college for all courses and Apprenticeships, and we will also request a school or college report.

Assessment at placement

Externally assessed assignments.

Future opportunities

The Extended Diploma equips you with the essential knowledge and skills required to progress to Higher Education in a related field of study.  The range if optional units, allows you to choose your preferred areas of interest and specialisms, such as;

Social Care

Health Studies

Health Sciences.
