Business Studies A Level at St John's Marlborough

Course description

Students will follow the AQA syllabus that has been structured to:

  • enable students to focus on the dynamic nature of the contemporary business world;
  • provide opportunities for research into topical business issues;
  • offer opportunities for the development and application of a range of academic skills.

Course content

The A level course covers ten themes/units. 

Unit 1. What is business?

Unit 2. Managers, leadership and decision making

Unit 3. Decision making to improve marketing performance

Unit 4. Decision making to improve operational performance

Unit 5. Decision making to improve financial performance

Unit 6. Decision making to improve H.R. performance

Unit 7. Analysing the strategic position of a business

Unit 8. Choosing strategic direction

Unit 9. Strategic methods: how to pursue strategies

Unit 10. Managing strategic change

Entry requirements

At least grade C in English and Maths. Students do not have to have studied GCSE Business Studies previously. Business Studies links well with other subjects including Economics, English, Modern Languages, Geography, Law and Psychology

Assessment

Assessment of the A level course is through three 2-hour papers which are equally weighted, being 33.3% of the final A-level grade.

Future opportunities

There are opportunities to study a range of courses including HND Business and Finance, Degrees in Business Studies or Marketing and HND/Degrees in a wide range of business related areas.

The course is also a good introduction to business life and employment. Students would be prepared for employment in banking, insurance and finance, sales and human resources as well as other aspects of business and finance.
