Business Studies AS/A-Level at Hellesdon High Sixth Form Centre

Course description

The Business Studies course encourages the practical application of business concepts through the use of ‘real world’ examples and case studies.  The syllabus has been devised to reflect the contemporary issues in the business world. The course is designed to encourage students to acquire a range of important and transferable skills that are valued by universities and employers.  Students are expected to critically examine businesses from a range of viewpoints.

Students of Business Studies would be expected to take an interest in the business world through news articles and other media outlets.  It is vital that these are incorporated into the more theoretical aspects of the course.  The examinations require thorough preparation and students must be required to undertake independent research and develop study skills beyond the classroom.

Entry requirements

To study at Hellesdon High School Sixth Form you will need: SIX GCSEs A* - C Grades will enable you to study FOUR A/S Level courses.

We would advise that a Grade B at GCSE would be a good indicator of potential for A Level but we will discuss this with you. Equally we can discuss options for individuals who may fall short of the six higher grade entry requirements.

When applying for courses you should look to study subjects that:

  • a) You have a strong interest in (and enjoyment of)
  • b) You feel you are successful at
  • c) Your Yr11 teachers have highlighted you are good at.

It may also be useful to investigate university/employment websites if you have a particular interest in following a subject forward after Sixth Form.

Subject Specific

Business Studies’ students do NOT need to have studied GCSE Business Studies or any other previous business course.  Students would need to be competent in English and be confident with basic mathematical principles.

Future opportunities

Business Studies is one of the most prevalent courses available at university.  It comes in many forms and can be combined with other subjects or can be refined to distinct specialisms such as Accounting, Marketing, Human Resource Management, International Business and Logistics, to name a few.
