ICT Level 2 BTEC First Extended Certificate at Basingstoke College of Technology

Course description

This course follows the Computer Science pathway and covers a wide range of subjects including:

Core Units
The Online World
  • Technology Systems
  • A Digital Portfolio

Mandatory Units

  • Mobile App Development
  • Software Development 
  • Software System Development

Specialist Units

  • Installing and Maintaining Computer Hardware
  • Installing and Maintaining Computer Software


The course will be delivered through a variety of mediums including individual and group assignments, practical application of classroom based teaching and industry related projects. Two of the core units are externally assessed via an online test.

As part of your programme of study students who have not gained a C grade in GCSE English language and maths will need to study for a resit to improve their grade . To enhance employment opportunities the course may also have additional qualifications built into the programme, work experience and enrichment activities.


This course is equivalent points value to 3 GCSEs at grades A*-C.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D or above, including English Language and Maths or successful completion of a Level 1 course such as Creative Technologies.


The course is continuously assessed through written and practical assignments/tests.

Financial information

If you are aged 16-18, tuition and registration fees are free. 
If you are aged 19 or over, tuition and registration fees are payable at the start of each year of study; please ask for details.
If you are aged 24 or over, you may be eligible for a Student Loan to assist with your fees; please ask for details.

Future opportunities

This course is a recognised route into a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma course. Students should achieve a Merit or Distinction grade at the end of the course to ensure progression to the next level, and have gained a C grade in GCSEs English and Maths.
