Mathematics A-Level at Lancaster Royal Grammar School

Course description

In the modern world a successful economy needs well-qualified young mathematicians, engineers, scientists, economists and computer scientists. These fields all require a high level of mathematical skills. Mathematical ability is a priceless asset and if you have it, make the most of it!

Interest, enthusiasm and determination are all essential if the A-level Mathematics course is to be successfully completed. In addition, evidence of competence at GCSE Mathematics is necessary and a grade A should be regarded as the normal minimum requirement. Success in A-level Mathematics requires the adoption from the start of a programme of continuous revision which should underpin the two years of study.

Mathematics can be combined with many other subjects in the sixth form. Popular combinations are: Maths and Further Mathematics, Maths with Sciences, Maths with Economics/Business studies, and Maths with Technology but many other combinations are possible. Studying a language alongside Mathematics enables additional possibilities at University.

The course follows the Edexcel specification and is modular, comprising six units of equal weight. Four of these units are “core” maths which follow on from GCSE work and develop mathematical skills and techniques. The remaining two units are “applied” which use the skills acquired in the “core” modules.

Course content

The content of individual “core” modules are:

In the Lower Sixth (AS level):

Core 1: Algebra and functions, Coordinate Geometry, Arithmetic series, Calculus

Core 2: Algebra and functions, Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry, Exponentials and Logarithms, Binomial Theorem, Geometric series, Calculus

In the Upper Sixth (A2 level)

Core 3: Algebra, Trigonometry, Exponentials, Logarithms, Differentiation, Numerical Methods.

Core 4: Algebra, Parametric equations, Binomial Series Expansions, Vectors, Calculus

There is some option for the “applied” units but in these you will be using the skills acquired in your “core” lessons. We will again be offering the
following choice of options:

Option 1: Mathematics with Mechanics Mechanics is the branch of applied mathematics dealing with the study of forces and motion. It is ideal for those studying Physics at A-level or intending to study Mathematics, Engineering, Science or Technology in particular at university. The content of the individual modules are:

Mechanics 1 (AS) : Modelling, Vectors, Straight Line Particle Kinematics, Straight Line Particle Dynamics, Statics, Moments
Mechanics 2 (A2): Straight Line Kinematics, Centres of Mass, Work and Energy, Collisions, Statics of Rigid Bodies.
 
Option 2: Mathematics with Statistics Statistics is the branch of applied mathematics dedicated to the collection and analysis of data. It is ideal for those studying Economics, Biology or Geography at A-level or intending to study these subjects, Mathematics, Statistics or Medicine at university. The content of the individual modules are:
Statistics 1 (AS) : Representation and summary of data, Probability, Correlation and Regression, Discrete random variables, Discrete distributions, The Normal distribution.
Statistics 2 (A2): Binomial and Poisson distributions, Continuous random variables, and distributions, Samples, Hypothesis tests.
 
 

Entry requirements

The entry requirement for Year 12 (Lower Sixth) is at least seven Bs or better in the GCSE examinations, including a minimum of a B grade in any subject to be taken. An A grade is required for A-level Mathematics. All applicants need a minimum of a C grade in both English and Mathematics, regardless of the subjects they wish to take.  

Please note that at the end of the Lower Sixth, at least three grades at D or above are normally required to ensure progression into the Upper Sixth (Year 13).

Overseas applicants

We will accept an equivalent level of performance in your country’s exams and will require verification of results by your school. A report supporting your application from your current school will also be very important.  Please note that we can only accept overseas students who are UK passport holders.

Assessment

Early testing on the key skills from GCSE is done after two weeks of term with mock examinations at the end of the Michaelmas Term.

In June of the Lower Sixth two “core” and one “applied” unit are examined to attain AS level. In June of the Upper Sixth the remaining two “core” and one “applied” units are examined to attain A2 level. All modules last 1.5 hours.

Mathematics is taught in thirteen lessons a fortnight of which eight are for study of the “core” modules and the remainder for studying the “applied” modules. You will have separate teachers for “core” and “applied”.

Future opportunities

Many University courses are “mathematicallyrich” such as the Sciences, all types of Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, Accountancy and not forgetting Mathematics. It is also highly recommended for courses such as Medicine and Veterinary Science to complement the Science A-levels.
