Course description

Business skills are essential for success in employment and provide transferrable skills for future study. You will learn new knowledge and skills, apply that knowledge and analyse and evaluate evidence in order to make judgments. This qualification will provide learners with the opportunity through applied learning to develop the core specialist knowledge, skills and understanding required in the business sector.

Course content

This course consists of three externally examined units and a choice of two further units which are centre-assessed and moderated externally. You will study the following 3 mandatory units to complete your portfolio:

Unit 1: The business environment This unit will help you develop an understanding of the range of different businesses that can exist in an economy. You will discover the different purposes that such organisations can have and the different forms of ownership that can exist. You will develop an understanding of the different ways in which businesses are organised to achieve their purposes.

Unit 2: Working in business In this unit you will develop a range of critical skills needed when working in business such as organisation, prioritisation and effective communication. You will learn about organisational protocols that businesses expect employees to follow.

Unit 3: Customers and Communication You will learn how vital customers are to the success of a business. You will learn how important it is for businesses to know their customer and what influences customer behaviour. In this unit you will understand how to communicate with customers.

There are a further 2 optional units to complete. There are a range to choose from but you are most likely to complete the following:

Unit 5: Marketing and market research Marketing is the function that makes sure a business sells the right products, at the right price, in the right place, using the most suitable promotion methods. Successful marketing is essential if a business is to survive in a very competitive business world. This unit has particular emphasis on the role of market research and how it contributes to marketing decision-making, and the actions a business may take.

Unit 21: Being entrepreneurial – evaluating viable opportunities (60 GLH) Entrepreneurs are people who identify opportunities and possess the drive to turn their ideas into reality. They can create wealth and provide employment opportunities for themselves and others. By completing this unit, you will not only understand what it takes to be entrepreneurial, but this unit will allow you to develop an important set of skills which will help you to be enterprising in many different areas of both your business and personal life.
