Music Technology - AS/A Level at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai

Course description

Are you passionate about music? Would you like to develop your skills as a musician, as well as widening your knowledge of popular music and the music industry? This course encourages you to explore you musicality, by creating original material and arrangements in a range of popular styles. It also gives you a valuable insight into the musical profession, and prepares you for a career.

The popular Edexcel course can be taken as part of a full-time programme of study in conjunction with other A Levels. It particularly complements the the long-established WJEC Music A Level, which it runs alongside. Each course teaches skills that can be used to support your work on the other course. The A Level can also be taken on a part-time basis by mature students.

Course content

The course is delivered as follows: 

  • Hands-on practical sessions, using our recording equipment and Apple computer suite running Logic Pro X software 
  • Theory and listening sessions, including a study of popular music since 1910.

Many College staff members speak both Welsh and English. In addition, course notes, workbooks, assignments, work experience and assessments are available bilingually. If you are interested in bilingual provision, please discuss at your interview.

Entry requirements

  • The minimum entry requirement is 5 GCSEs at grade C or above. Specific additional entry requirements will be discussed with you at interview. 
  • Consideration will be given to mature students without recognised qualifications 
  • Proven performing skills and a strong interest in music are highly desirable. 

All places are subject to satisfactory interview.

 

Assessment

The course is assessed through a blend of the following: 

  • A portfolio of recordings, produced under controlled conditions 
  • A two hour exam at the end of each year.

Future opportunities

Whether you gain the full A Level or just the AS Level, the course adds to your qualifications and helps you to progress. You will gain UCAS points and be able to apply for a range of Higher Education courses at many institutions.

If you wish to continue studying music, you could proceed onto a university degree or Higher National Diploma. Your career options will include working as a Media Composer, Musical Director, Session Musician, Studio Engineer or Producer. You could also work elsewhere in music technology, or progress into the media, education, publishing and theatre sectors.
