Course description

BTEC in Business Studies

Course content

Business Studies is a subject that is relevant to everything that happens in the modern world. From the recession, to the survival of local businesses, to the current euro/dollar crisis, Business Studies helps students understand how business works and gives them the skills to run their own business in the future.

Business Studies links with a broad mixture of subjects. It is often taken by students who have a creative flair and may want to work in product design. It is also frequently taken alongside Maths A Level for students seeking career in finance, banking or accountancy. But the subject itself is flexible and links to any career.

Level 3 Business Studies involves a mixture of written pieces of coursework and examinations.

  • Within the first year, students will look at how businesses are set up and organised, the different stakeholder groups and what it means to be enterprising. The external examination is on Financial Planning and Analysis and will give students an insight into profit, loss and performance.

  • In the second year, topics include motivating and managing staff as well as the practicalities of business.

Future opportunities

The qualification leads onto higher education in a variety of degrees. Many universities offer Business Studies as a single subject degree, but also as a combination degree with other subjects. You may also wish to focus on one aspect of Business Studies at degree level such as Accountancy, Marketing or Human Resources.

Alternatively you could go straight into a management trainee job or an apprenticeship course within a company, developing the skills, understanding and experience to advance to management level.
