General Art and Design Extended Diploma Level 3 at Sandwell College

Course description

Enthusiastic creative people who want to unlock their potential by trying different art and design specialisms, including fine art, painting, drawing, design, craft, sculpture, textiles, fashion and photography, with the chance to specialise in the second year.

Course content

The course offers you multiple opportunities to experiment with a variety of different media and styles of art and design to complete exciting projects, including live briefs based in the real world of the creative industries. You will study the history and context of art and design to inspire your practical work.

In the first year you will gain a 90 Credit Diploma and in the second a full Extended Diploma. Your aim will be to build an impressive portfolio of work as your passport to future success.

Entry requirements

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (including English) or a Level 2 qualification in a design subject.

We set you a challenge. We show you how to do it, work through your ideas and then you produce the work in the form of a project. This includes all your planning and development work, the actual artwork and some thoughts on how you've done. This is then assessed to either pass, merit or distinction level and then we move on to the next. This pattern is repeated throughout the two years with regular feedback on how you are getting on from your tutors.

Future opportunities

The course is equivalent to 3 A levels, so you can use it to apply for university and study at HND or degree level. Recent students have gone on to study Fine Arts and Illustration degrees at local universities, for instance.

Careers with the creative industries include interior design, architecture, fashion design, graphics, product design, fine art, art therapy, teaching, film and web design.
