Art and Design Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma (UAL) at Exeter College

Course description

Student can choose to study for a Diploma / Extended Diploma in one of four specialist pathways: Fine Art, Graphics, Photography, Textiles.
This course is ideal for students who wish to study Art and Design predominantly and who are committed to a career within this field. It is equivalent to three A levels and is universally recognised as an entry qualification for degree level study. In your first year you will study the 90-credit Diploma progressing to the Extended Diploma in your second year.

Most of the work is practical and studio/workshop based. There will be whole class discussions and lectures on the more theoretical aspects of the course. Your lecturers will work closely with you and you will be encouraged, as the course progresses, to develop your own interests. 

Course content

You will have the opportunity to explore a range of pathways before specialising in one of the following: Fine Art, Graphics, Photography, Textiles.

The course's principle aims are:

  • To enable you to develop advanced level knowledge and skills in the broad principles of Art and Design
  • To enable you to try a range of different Art and Design activities and disciplines eg. painting, drawing, fine art  graphics, typography, digital media, photography, printmaking, fashion and textiles,  from which to identify the most appropriate specialism
  • To enable you to build up a portfolio of work in your chosen specialism that will help you progress to further/higher education or employment

Entry requirements

You need five GCSEs at grade Cor above (including English language) and art at grade B or above, plus three GCSEs at grade D or above. You should have an interest in and commitment to art and design and you will have to present a portfolio at your interview.

Financial information

Some essential materials will be provided by the college. There is a materials and equipment fee of £80.00 to be paid at enrolment at the start of your course.  You are likely to spend at least £80.00 per term on other additional materials and equipment. You will be invited to take part in study visits to exhibitions; a typical day visit to London costs £25.00-£35.00. There may be the opportunity to participate in a residential visit abroad.

Future opportunities

The college has an excellent record of placing students onto the pre-degree Foundation course as well as directly onto degree level courses in art and design specialisms. For example, Fashion and Graphic Design at Plymouth College of Art, and Fine Art at Plymouth University. Alternatively you could look for work in a number of art and design related fields.
