A Level - Level 3- OCR Computing (St Margaret Ward) AQA (St John Fisher) at St John Fisher Catholic College - Trinity Sixth Form

Course description

 

The A Level course is centred on programming and is supported by  agencies such as the Computer Society and the CBI.  There is a large hands on element and pupils learn by doing. The course is  delivered by highly experienced Computer teachers through the school VLE, supported by text books and by additional electronic resources. It can be accessed by students registered on the course both at school and at home. Pupils are encouraged to use the internet for research and to make use of the most current technology as they work.

At AS level the emphasis is on practical programming concepts

At A2 there is a major coursework task which, once approved by the teacher has to be completed independently. The task involves detailed liaison with a client user or agency to ensure that the end product meets  preset requirements. High level Computing theory is taught to students at A2, to prepare them for the Comp 3 examination. Homework, private study  and research opportunities are used to support learning.

 

Course content

An academic TWO year course of study, in which you learn all about computing. The emphasis is on Computer Programming and on Systems design.  During year 2 you complete a programmed solution to a real problem associated with a user. Realistic needs are taken into account as you specify, design and create the solution. Learning undertaken is an excellent basis for a degree course, although it is useful in all subject areas and the analytical skills you will develop will help with other A level courses and subsequent higher education courses.

 

Entry requirements

Grade 6 pass in Mathematics at GCSE

Assessment

01- Computer systems (140 marks- 2.5 hours - 40%)

Topics include: Computational thinking, programming techniques, software development methodologies, algorithms, including standard algorithms for sorting and searching.

02 - Algorithms nd Programming - (140 marks - 2.5 hours - 40%)

Topics include: computational thinking, problem solving using programming, algorithms and their use to describe problems and standard algorithms e.g bubble sort

03 - Programming project - (70 marks - 20%)

You will select a user-driven problem and carry out the analysis, design, implementation and evaluation of the problem using a high level language e.g.Python

A Level- 80% Examination 20% Coursework.

 

Future opportunities

The British Computer Society recently highlighted an alarming down turn in Computer Science graduate projections which could imperil long-term success for the nation's expanding IT economy. “The future success of the British IT economy, particularly in the nano­technology and biotechnology sectors, will rely on the availability of computer science graduates.

The AQA or OCR  Computing course will prepare you for further education, specifically in a globally expanding ICT/Computing field. From games or web-design to systems analysis, high quality practitioners will always be required.  A GCE in Computing could be the first step on that path.
