Art and Design (Textiles) AS at Tomlinscote School and Sixth Form College
Students are required to produce a theme based coursework project and an externally set terminal examination project for assessment in both year 12 and 13 in accordance with the Edexcel syllabus. The final piece of work for the terminal examination must be completed under examination conditions over a period of eight hours in year 12 and twelve hours in year 13. These courses are designed to encourage an adventurous and enquiring approach to art and design. Successful students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of past and contemporary art and design practice and be able to produce artwork that embraces a range of ideas. In particular, students are encouraged to develop: intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers. investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical and expressive skills, aesthetic understanding and critical judgement. an understanding of the interrelationships between art and design and an awareness of the contexts in which they operate. knowledge and understanding of art and design in contemporary society and in other times and cultures. skill and control exploring a range of media, techniques and processes. Students will be required to demonstrate achievement through response to all four assessment objectives listed below: A01 Record observations, experiences, ideas, information and insights in visual and other forms, appropriate to intentions. A02 Analyse and evaluate critically sources such as images, objects, artefacts and texts, showing understanding of purposes, meanings and contexts. A03 Develop ideas through sustained investigations and exploration, selecting and using materials, processes and resources, identifying and interpreting relationships and analysing methods and outcomes. A04 Present a personal, coherent and informed response, realising intentions, and articulating and explaining connections with the work of others. Students will visit local and London based galleries as part of their studies.

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as History of Art or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Art and Design, which could lead onto higher education in areas of art and design, photography, architecture or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to art and design such as an Architect, Interior Designer, Artist or fashion designer. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will encourage you to explore your creative mind and help you develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
