A Level Design and Technology – Product Design at The Elmgreen School
Yes, if you have a talent for designing, developing and making products. If you aim to have a career in engineering or design, this is obviously a good choice. In addition it is a fantastic choice for any student who would like to develop their creative and entrepreneurial skills. The problem solving and research based skills you will build on when working for this A- level will be useful for any degree course in the future. The best preparation for this course would be a good grade in GCSE Design and Technology which shows you are creative and have a the basic skills to get started.

• Learn how prototypes could reach industrial production
• Understand the mathematical and scientific concepts which underpin
• Technological design decisions.
• Analyse design situations and requirements
• Acquire a sound knowledge of manufacturing technologies, materials and their uses
grade B in Design Technology
First Year: AS
Unit 1- Prod 1 Materials, Components and Application 2 hour written paper 50% of the AS (25% of the A level) Available in January and June
Unit 2- Prod 2 Learning through Designing and Making Coursework approx. 50 hours, 50% of the AS. (25% of the A level) Manufactured, designed and made outcomes and portfolio. Available June only
Second Year: A2
Unit 3- Prod 3 Design and Manufacture 2 hour written paper 25% of A level.
Unit 4- Prod 4 Design and Making Practice Coursework approx. 60 hours 25% of A level Manufactured outcome and portfolio
This qualification could prepare you for: Graphic design, Interior Design, industrial Design, Product Design, Marketing and new media, Product development, Product testing, Materials technologist, working in the Theatre with set or Prop design, Advertising, Architecture, Shop Visual display and many other Design related jobs
