AS and A2 Fine Art at Casterton College Rutland

Course description

Our Fine Art course covers a broad range of creative experiences that provide students with opportunities to develop personal responses to ideas, observations, experiences, environments and cultures in practical, critical and contextual forms.

This four-unit specification, two at AS level and two at A2, requires students to develop their ability to show a range of skills. These include:

  • independence of mind in developing their own ideas
  • an interest and enthusiasm for art and design
  • the experience of working with a range of media, including traditional and new media and technologies
  • an awareness of different roles, functions, audiences and consumers of art and design practice.

Students will be introduced to a variety of experiences exploring a range of fine art media, techniques and processes. They will explore relevant images, artefacts and resources relating to art and design from the past and from recent times. Students will gain appreciation of different approaches to recording images, such as observation, analysis, expression and imagination.

Students will have the opportunity to take part in Life Drawing workshops, one off practical workshops and visits to local galleries and environments that support their portfolios.

Course content

You will have the opportunitiy to experience the following areas of study that include:

  • drawing and painting
  • printing
  • mixed media (using digital photography to support)

Entry requirements

6 A*-C grades including English and Maths and#43; a portfolio passed by Head of Art.

Assessment

Students will be assessed on 4 assessment objectives:

AO1 - Developing ideas using contextual sources

AO2 - Experimenting and selecting appropriate media and techniques refining ideas as work progresses

AO3 - Recording and reflecting upon work as it progresses

AO4 - Present a personal response connected to contextual sources.

Progression - The course is suitable for those who wish to study Art at a higher level or who are looking to take up a career where an Art background would be an advantage such as - Media and Commercial Arts, Fine Arts, Professional Arts, Design Arts, Editorial Art, Arts Management.
