Applied Science Level 3 BTEC 90 Credit Diploma at Mid Cheshire College

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Applied Science consists of 10 different units of science study, delivered largely through lectures, practical work and investigations. There are 6 core units and 4 specialist units. During the course you will take units in: • Fundamentals of Science; • Working in the Science Industry; • Scientific Investigation; • Scientific Practical Techniques; • Maths tools for Science Technicians; • Statistics for Science Technicians; ; • Physiology of Human Body Systems; • Chemistry for Biology Technicians; Genetics and Genetic Engineering; 

Course content

This course includes a Study Programme to provide learners with a coherent and enriching curriculum which will provide them with the academic, social and employability skills to progress to further or higher education or employment. The content of the study programme is designed to broaden the learner experience beyond the main qualification of study. The key theme of Study Programmes at Level 3 will be the development of personal, social and enterprise skills to enable progression to higher levels of study or employment. As well as your core qualification you will study GCSE or Functional Skills in English or Maths plus English and maths development as part of the core qualification. Learners will also undertake personal progress planning and pastoral education. Plus additional personal development activity which will include work experience and projects.

Entry requirements

For the 90 Credit Diploma (1 year) you will need a minimum of: i) 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C ii) or a Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science (Merit), iii) or a Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science (Merit), To help your employability skills, the college structures the timetable to allow students who have not achieved grade C in Maths or English GCSE to study it alongside the BTEC L3. Assessment

10 units, assessed by a large number of assignments continually throughout the year. There are no external examinations, with the exception of English and Maths depending on your entry qualification grades.

Future opportunities

Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science, Training or Employment. Successful completion of the course will show that you have developed a range of skills, knowledge and understanding in Science, as well as the transferable skills of communication, IT, self-motivation and team work, which are important to employers
