Plumbing City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma at Bedford College

Course description

This course is designed to help you find work in plumbing, equipping you with the skills to carry out a range of basic plumbing work to industry standards. This practically based course is designed to improve your prospects of finding work within the plumbing industry and can be the first step towards a recognised plumbing qualification.

Course content

During the course you will cover a range of topics, including:

  • Structure of the Construction Industry
  • Safe Working Practices.
  • Environmental and Sustainability measures in domestic dwellings.
  • Site preparation for working in the construction industry.
  • Above ground drainage.
  • Plumbing Science
  • Installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing systems.
  • Principles of working with copper pipework, plastics and low carbon steel.

Entry requirements

To start you will need a keen interest in plumbing. Some evidence of studying at GCSE level or successful completion of an entry level qualification would be an advantage. Entry is subject to a successful interview, where you will be asked to complete a skills assessment.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed in site simulated areas and by a number of multiple choice question papers and practical assessments.

Financial information

This course could be free! You will be eligible if you are aged 19-24 on the 31st August of the year you are starting your course and are actively seeking employment and in receipt of a means tested benefit (such as job seekers, housing benefit, council tax benefit). Please note you will need to be able to produce evidence of the benefit in your name when you come to enrol.

Future opportunities

On successful completion you could progress onto Plumbing Level 2 or employment.

Further information

You will be required to wear suitable safety footwear and overalls whilst in the workshop. If you are aged 16-18, tuition fees, exam fees and College membership are free. However, there are additional costs associated with some courses. For this course, you will be required to pay £42 for uniform/clothing, £50 for course books and £30 trips/visits.
