Geography at Sprowston Community High School

Course description

The AS course covers units from both human and physical geography: rivers, floods and management , cold environments (including the work of ice on our landscapes and the importance and future of the Arctic and Antarctica) or coastal environments, global population change and food supply issues, Energy issues or Health issues.

The A2 course will cover a choice of three from these topics: plate tectonics and associated hazards, weather and climate and associated hazards, challenges facing ecosystems, world cities’ development and globalisation, contemporary conflicts and challenges. In addition you will carry out fieldwork and write reports on your investigations, which will also be examined. You will be introduced to many different geographical skills: investigative techniques, graphical, statistical and mapping techniques and the use of ICT.

SUCCESS IN GEOGRAPHY

In lessons, and in your personal study, you will be involved in a variety of activities: thinking tasks, decision making tasks and problem solving; the interpretation and presentation of maps, photographs and sketches; the use of IT for research and to present data and reports; discussion and debates; data analysis and presentation, including the application of statistical techniques; research and report writing; individual presentations; fieldwork and individual investigations.
