Mathematics A Level *FEES PAYABLE* at Northampton High School

Course description

This course can be considered by any student wishing to continue their interest in Mathematics and is particularly advantageous for those taking A Level science subjects. It offers the stimulation of investigating new ideas, the challenge of tackling problems and the satisfaction of solving them, which those girls who enjoy Mathematics will have already experienced to a certain degree.

It is recommended for girls wishing to pursue a career in scientific or technical work, engineering, business studies, banking, accountancy and computing. It is also accepted by most teaching hospitals as a suitable qualification for entry to medicine or dentistry degree courses.

Course content

AS Level
Unit 1 Pure Core 1 (MPC1) Algebra; coordinate geometry; differentiation; integration

Unit 2 Pure Core 2 (MPC2) Algebra; sequences and series; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; integration.

Unit 3 Mechanics 1 (MM1B) Mathematical modeling in mechanics; kinematics in one and two dimensions; statics and forces; momentum; Newton’s Laws; connected particles; projectiles.

A2 Level

Unit 4 Pure Core 3 (MPC3) Algebra; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; integration; numerical methods.

Unit 5 Pure Core 4 (MPC4)Algebra; coordinate geometry; sequences and series; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms, differentiation; integration, vectors.

Unit 6 Mechanics 2 (MM2B) OR Statistics 1 (MS1B) Mathematical modeling in mechanics; moments and centres of mass; kinematics; Newton’s Laws; application of differential equations; circular motion; work and energy.

Standard deviation, scaling, probability, binomial and normal distributions, estimation, sampling, correlation and regression.

Entry requirements

A minimum of a grade B at GCSE in Mathematics

Assessment

100% examination.

Mathematics A Level is highly regarded by Universities and is frequently required to support applications for a variety of courses. Further Mathematics should also be considered by anyone considering degrees in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering and possibly Economics.
